What is a PCA?
What is a Personal Care Assistant?
A Personal Care Attendant (PCA) is an individual who is hired to assist persons with disabilities (referred to as Clients) maintain their independence based on their own personal choices.
A PCA helps persons with disabilities with activities of daily living (ADLs). Typical ADL tasks include getting out of bed, dressing and undressing, bathing, grooming, bowel and bladder care, eating, meal preparation, transportation, shopping, household management, and other duties essential for Persons with disabilities to maintain an independent lifestyle within the community.
In the PCA Choice Program, persons with disabilities direct and manage their own ADL tasks performed by PCAs wherever services may be provided. Persons with disabilities are responsible for learning their limitations and for determining how much PCA care is needed to achieve their desired level of independence.
You can develop a great working relationship with your employer; a relationship in which you can have fun and be comfortable. Once that is established, the relationship between Client and attendant can be one of the most rewarding and satisfying experiences in this unique work. For many individuals with disabilities, personal assistance services can make the difference between living rather than existing!
